Visitor Visa

Requirements of Visitor Visa

Know all about New Zealand Visitor Visa

You can come to New Zealand along with your family as a visitor or tourist for holidays, to explore New Zealand or to visit friends & relatives. During your stay in New Zealand, you’ll need enough money to support yourself and everyone included in your application for the duration of your stay.

Are You A Citizen from a New Zealand Visa Waiver Country

If you are a citizen of visa waiver country (CLICK TO SEE LIST OF NEW ZEALAND VISA WAIVER COUNTRIES) then you might be able to travel visa free to New Zealand. You may not need to apply for a regular New Zealand Visitor Visa if you are visiting New Zealand for a short period, however you must request/apply an NZeTA before you travel if you are:

  • a citizen of a country on the list of visa waiver countries and territories
  • leaving for New Zealand on or after 1 October 2019, and
  • visiting for up to 3 months — or if you are a British citizen, up to 6 months.

Know more about NZeTA (New Zealand Electronic Travel Authority) HERE.

What a visitor visa allows

A visitor visa allows you to stay in New Zealand as a visitor for a limited amount of time. It allows you to:

  • visit as a tourist;
  • visit friends or relatives;
  • play sport or perform in cultural events without pay;
  • enter New Zealand to get married;
  • undertake short-term study;

A visitor visa allows you to study one or more courses of up to a total of three months in each of the 12-month periods your visa is valid.

School-aged visitor visa holders can attend a primary, intermediate, or secondary school for a single period of study of up to three months per calendar year provided the study finishes within that calendar year. You are also not permitted to study in term one of a school year if you held a visitor visa and undertook a single period of study in term four of the previous year.
If you want to study for longer than three months you will need to apply for a student visa.

WHO CAN BE INCLUDED IN YOUR VISITOR VISA APPLICATION:

  1. Your Spouse;
  2. Your all dependent children aged 19 and under;

Who is considered as “Dependent Child" for including in Visitor Visa application

If your child is aged… your child is considered dependent only if they…

17 or younger

18 or 19

  • are single
  • don’t have any children of their own
  • rely on you and/or your partner for financial support

Children aged 20 and over aren’t eligible to be included in their parents’ visa applications or to apply for a visitor or student visa based on their relationship to their parents. But they still may be able to join you in New Zealand if each child applies for a visa in his or her own right.

HOW LONG CAN YOU STAY ON A NEW ZEALAND VISITOR VISA

You can visit New Zealand as a genuine tourist for up to 9 months in an 18-month period.

  • The 18-month period is calculated backwards from the last day you intend to be in New Zealand.
  • If the last day you’ll be here is 1 December, then your 18-month period will begin on 1 June of the year before.

You can apply for another 3 months’ stay and extend your stay to 12 months in a 24-month period, if:

  • you need more time to complete your tourist itinerary
  • you can’t leave New Zealand for reasons beyond your control
  • you’ve applied for residence for the first time.

To apply for another 3 months’ stay, you must have financially supported yourself and not worked, studied or been sponsored during your stay.

If you’ve recently visited New Zealand for a total of 12 months, you have to remain outside New Zealand for 12 months before you can apply for another Visitor Visa.

DO I NEED RETURN OR ONWARD TICKET

Unless your visa label or letter says “Return/onward travel not required”, you must have either of the following:

  • a return or onward travel ticket to a country you can enter or an
  • an acceptable sponsor who can pay for your travel ticket out of New Zealand to a country you can enter.

If there is nothing printed on your Visa label or E-Visa regarding “Return or Onward Ticket" – then you MUST have a “Return or Onward Ticket for a country you are eligible to enter"

      • bank statements in your name;
      • credit card statement in your name;
      • evidence of your parent/s wages or salary that meets the income threshold of NZ$43,322.76 (if you are the dependent child of a temporary work visa holder).
        You must not send cash or original evidence of funds.
  • You must have a ticket to leave New Zealand or be sponsored for the cost of your onward/return travel.

What type of evidence of onward travel is acceptable?

Acceptable evidence of your onward travel includes:

    • actual travel tickets (confirmed or open-dated) out of New Zealand to a country which you have the right of entry to;
    • written confirmation from an airline or travel agency that onward travel has been booked and paid for;
    • anything that demonstrates a confirmed departure from New Zealand such as the confirmed departure of a yacht or private aircraft.

YOU NEED TO BE A GENUINE AND BONA FIDE VISITOR

One of the main requirements of Visitor Visa is the requirement to be ‘bona fide’ visitor, which means you genuinely intend a temporary visit to New Zealand. When INZ assess if you are a bona fide visitor, they consider all of the information that they have regarding you.
For example, they will consider:

  • your personal circumstances, such as:
    • your family ties in your home country and New Zealand
    • personal, financial, employment or other commitments in your home country and New Zealand
    • any circumstances that might mean you may not want to return to your home country when any visa expires
    • information that they have about previous applications, such as whether you have previously overstayed or breached visa conditions
    • whether you have dependants who are unlawfully in New Zealand, and
    • your ability to leave or be deported from New Zealand to your country of citizenship.

INZ will consider all of the information you provide in support of your application but is not obliged to ask you for more. So, with evidence that you meet the particular requirements for the type of visa you are applying for, you should provide any evidence that you think demonstrates that you are a bona fide applicant.

How much does a visitor visa cost?

You need to pay an application fee and levies when you lodge your application unless you are not required to do so.
Visa application fees can change without notice and may be different depending upon how and from where you apply.

Most people pay visa application fee by credit card (Mastercard, Visa or UnionPay).  Most of New Zealand Immigration Offices inside and outside New Zealand do not accept cash.

For up to date information about fees and levies: Check Visa Fee HERE.

For example If you apply for a Visitor Visa for New Zealand from New Delhi, India ONLINE, then the decision time is within 28 days. You can know about the application Fee, Decision time and application receiving centres contact details applicable in your situation from HERE
